Branch and Systems Librarian
Diné College, Shiprock, NM
Setting:
Diné College was established in 1968 as the first tribally-controlled community college in the United States. In creating an institution of higher education, the Navajo Nation sought to encourage Navajo youth to become contributing members of the Navajo Nation and the world society. Diné College awards Associate degrees and Certificates in areas important to the economic and social development of the Navajo Nation. In addition, two baccalaureate degrees are also offered: Elementary Education and Business Administration.
An architectural gem, the Senator John Pinto Library at the Shiprock, New Mexico, campus is a branch library of the Kinyaa’áani Library at the main campus in Tsaile, Arizona. Diné College is seeking a librarian to manage the Pinto Library and serve as the Systems Librarian for all three libraries serving the College.
Role:
Under the direction of the College Librarian, the Director of the Senator John Pinto Library will administer the day-to-day operations of the library at Diné College’s campus in Shiprock, New Mexico. Supervises three FTE library technicians. Serves patrons at the Reference/Circulation desk. Provides Information Literacy instruction. Serves as Systems Librarians for all libraries in the system.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Manages all aspects of the day-to-day operations of the Senator John Pinto Library. This includes implementing policies and procedures, scheduling staff, and overseeing the building. Supervises, trains, and evaluates library staff and student workers. Maintains fiscal control of the Pinto Library budget and submits annual budget plan to the College Librarian. Engages in both short-term and long-term planning efforts in concert with other libraries in the Diné College system.
Serves patrons at the Reference/Circulation desk. May include some evening and/or weekend hours.
Administers the integrated library system (Voyager) for all library locations. Works collaboratively with the vendor in installing, upgrading, troubleshooting, and training. Runs reports as requested.
Manages and supports all of the hardware and sofware in the libraries, in collaboration with IT department.
Manages the libraries’ growing collection of electronic resources. Will maintain, promote, develop access to, and monitor usage of electronic resources. Negotiates license agreements.
Experience:
At least two years of professional experience at an academic library. Familiarity with library management systems and other technological aspects of library operation. Supervisory experience in any setting is preferred.
Education:
Master’s degree in Library Science from a program accredited by the American Library Association.
Skills:
Ability to work effectively both in a team and independently.
Ability to work pleasantly and cooperatively with faculty, staff, and students.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Ability to supervise the work of others effectively and efficiently.
Familiarity with library software and hardware.
Oral fluency in Navajo is highly desirable, but not mandatory.
Salary:
$50,000 per annum.
